ALGHERO, Sardinia - It's dusk and my travel colleague - the New York-based James Beard award-winning cookbook author and journalist Julia della Croce - and I are walking the spectacular, stoned streets of Alghero, on the western coast of Sardinia. We've ventured into the old, walled part of town, near the 13th century port, where the atmosphere is rich with Catalanic character. Della Croce turns out to be part Sardinian, with family from the southern city of Cagliari, the island's capital, while my parents were born in Ozieri, Sassari, closer to the north-east.
